| Name: | Johan Andersen (OU) |
|---|
Character: Johan Andersen
Series/Fandom: Yuugioh! GX
Original or Alternate: Original
Age: 18
Gender: Male
Species: Human
Sexuality: Hasn’t really had time to think about it or show any sexual preference, but probably would receive advances from either side as long as he also liked them.
Appearance: Johan is a rather tall teen with wide shoulders, reflecting his European ancestry. He has extremely spiky and unruly celadon-coloured hair and striking emerald eyes. He wears a flounced shirt that is cropped in such a way to hide his surprisingly—though proportional—toned physique. His shirt is usually white but has been known to change to lavender. He also wears a cropped blue vest with a high collar, black pants with vertical purple strips running along the front, white boots, and what can only be described as brown bootcovers or gaiters secured on top by buckles and on the bottom by a red half-orb clip.
His face is almost always relaxed, and he can often be found smiling. Though, because his eyebrows are rather low, his smile can look like a snide smirk at times.
Personality: Johan is a generally cheerful boy with a knack for Duel Monsters, but is actually much more profound than he first seems. Vaguely philosophical, he has been shown to supplicate to a higher power to give him the ability to save his family, the Gem Beasts. He is very open with his opinions and says some strong and strange things. For example, he says that any follower of his friend Juudai should be his follower as well. As for his “depth”, he can easily read a duel if his mind is clear and he is not caught up in the moment or carried away. If he gets something in his mind he is bound to do it, and does not mind if it is socially unacceptable. For example, he plans with his friends to steal food from the elite dorm for their own private party.
But for all his candid nature, he also has a streak of secrecy, which more or less reflects his judgment of character. If he knows that someone will not understand his mission or goal, he will not bother telling them. And he is a bit of a spazz, as he wanted to ask an opponent’s monster for an autograph but did not get a chance because they were in a duel, which again is part of his playful, roseate nature. As a point of interest, Johan was nearly instant friends with Juudai, and both felt as if they had met before upon their first meeting.
Johan comes of as a rather tactile person, and has no qualms about holding or propping someone up if they need it. He seems to be big on holding shoulders, though, and if this is significant is not known. Rather than a manifestation of romantic feeling, this tendency probably stems from his tangible passion and want to influence people.
Abilities/Strengths: He can see and communicate with Duel Spirits and has his own spirit partner “Gem Beast Ruby Carbuncle.” (The orb on the end of her tail can be looked through to reveal the true “inner nature” of something.) He is also the “master” ofthe Gem Beast household, meaning that he was accepted by and is the only user of the Gem Beast deck. Also, he owns the Gem God Rainbow Dragon which can act as a bridge between the dimensions and transport entire student population and school building. He also can see the darkness which is infecting cards, and seems to be at least aware of his darkness, even if vaguely.
Mentally, he is fairly stable and has a generally positive outlook on life and does not care one lick what others think of him. He seems to be able to adapt to situations without any stress, and has been shown to keep a cool head even when the adults were freaking out about the school being transported to an alternate dimension. If it was needed, he would always step into the role of the leader. (If he would be effective in all situations is debatable though, since his methods and opinions might be too unconventional for those he needs to guide.) However, he seems to be fine under the law of someone else as long as it does not affect him aversely. He also has a great altruistic streak, having gladly given himself up to return Juudai, the students, and the school back to the proper place.
Also of note his extreme empathy. He cares deeply for those that are precious to him and is very, very protective of them. He cares so much about bonds (in particular between a duellist and his deck) that he has made it his life’s mission to come into contact with people and teach them that the spirits of their deck are always there, feeling and living and waiting to form relationships with them.
Weaknesses: One of Johan’s most prominent characteristics is his fantastic, passion-driven tunnel-vision. He’s a bit stubborn, and his strange way of conducting himself along with his strong opinions can turn him people off to him. Though he is rather social and open, he has few true friends at the Academia. In fact, only Juudai seems to genuinely be interested in him. Though the others claim to be his friend, they just are not as driven as Juudai is to rescue him from the alternate dimensions. He can easily get up in things, things such as those that are precious to him. He gets so protective of them that he seemingly kills a man who had injured his Gem Beasts.
Though he is aware of his darkness, he still has it, which is his desire to defeat Juudai in a duel—in words, dominate him. That probably hangs around in him and, if exploited correctly, could lead to some real damage since he has placed so much of his trust in Juudai.
If Johan were to meet anyone famous or whom he hold in high esteem, he would very likely to spazz. Maybe not in the physical sense, but his attention would be diverted until he either got over it or the person had left the room.
Notable Possessions: He possesses the Gem Beast deck which is one of a kind and which only he can use. He also carries with him a standard Academia-issued Duel Disk.
History: Johan transferred from North School at the beginning of his third year (equivalent to the American senior year) to Duel Academia as a representative of North School. Duel Academia had an exchange programme in which the top student from the four other branches of the school (East, West, North, South) attended Duel Academia for some time in order to help boost the duelling talent of the student population. Sometime before he had acquired the Gem Beasts at an European tournament from the creator of Duel Monsters, Pegasus J. Crawford, because they reacted to him when he duelled and had chosen him to be the head of their household. Despite being considered a priceless deck, Pegasus would only give them to him. Later, Johan was named fifth best duellist in the world by Pegasus and, considering that he created the cards, probably knows what he is talking about.
However, the Gem Beast deck was not complete, and was missing the ultimate form of the Gem Beasts. Pegasus agreed that if he or Johan ever found the lithograph containing the Ultimate Gem God Rainbow Dragon, he would make it into a card and give it to Johan. The Gem Beasts have their own legend as well—during the reign of Julius Caesar seven gemstones, the colours of the rainbow, were gathered from all over the empire and were brought back to Rome as a lithograph to symbolise the prosperity of the Roman empire. However, a storm struck and the ship carrying the gemstones and lithograph was supposedly sunk, therefore losing the lithograph to time. Pegasus heard this myth and created the Gem Beasts in the spirit of it.
Sometime before obtaining the Gem Beasts but after enrolling in North School, Johan came across a duel spirit (Jerry Beans Man) in distress. Upon following the duel spirit, Johan came across a boy who had just had a very sentimental card given to him by his father stolen. Though the boy could not see the spirit, Johan was able to convince him that his cards had a bond with him anyway, and cared for him as he cared for them. It was then that Johan made it his goal to work to connect duellists with their decks and the spirits. Also, Johan promises the boy he will get his card back, and later faces the man (Giese) in a duel after one of his Gem Beasts are kidnapped. Giese is seemingly killed by Johan, though whether or not he actually does it open to speculation.
Anyway, Johan’s adventures at Duel Academia begin as soon as he is off the ferry—he meets Juudai atop of the Duel Academia after the other wakes up from a strange nightmare that foreshadows many of the woes to come. Juudai seems to not mind it, however, and is instead distracted by the strange creature he sees. It is Ruby Carbuncle, Johan’s spirit partner. The two boys meet but do not exchange names, and both remark that they feel as though they had meet one another before. After that comes the student orientation to which Johan is late. When the roll call comes for the various branch champions, Johan is no where to be found. He arrives soon, however, and apologises for his poor sense of direction. Juudai, who had not known before, learns that the strange boy from the roof is Johan, the North School champion.
The two take part in the exhibition match, and are the first two to receive the Dis-bands which sap the duel energy of a duellist after a duel. They both are almost instant friends, and spend the next few days almost constantly in company as they go through various trials and the mystery surrounding the mysterious Professor Cobra and the Dis-duels.
Johan duels Giese when the group finally goes to confront Professor Cobra after learning he is behind the Dis-duels and the collapsing of all the students. After the duel with Cobra the entire school is pulled into an alternate dimension and most of the students are turned into duel zombies. Their only hope to get back is by the power of the Rainbow Dragon, and after an interdimensional duel followed by a battle of epic proportions, the card is sent to the alternate dimension and finally finds its way into Johan’s deck.
Johan pulls a major altruistic move and sacrifices himself to return the entire Duel Academia and its students back to its proper dimension with the power of his Rainbow Dragon. However, his friend Juudai blames himself for Johan being left behind and ends up going back to the alternate dimensions to save him, ultimately triggering the events that led to an entire transformation of his soul. Unfortunately, Johan’s body had been possessed by the entity trying to get revenge on Juudai for sending her up into outer space to learn the meaning of justice. She had hurt all of Juudai’s opponents when he was a little boy because she was protecting him. Eventually Johan’s soul is freed and saved (he had been immured in the Rainbow Dragon). He then gives Juudai the Rainbow Dragon to use in his duel against Yubel, and does not observe the duel that Juudai has with Yubel, but knows when Juudai has successfully used his ace card.
In season four Johan is one of the only ones who can see the darkness infecting the cards. This leads him to being the only one who can aid Juudai, and he is the one who wakes him after a duel from seems to be the growing influence of Darkness. After talking for a bit they get into a speed boat and head from Domino City for the Academia island. Upon arrival they find the place swarmed with Mr.T’s and Fubuki Tenjoin locked in a duel with Fujiwara Yuusuke. The duel ends in Fubuki’s defeat and departure to the realm of darkness where everyone else in the world had already been sent.
The three remaining souls then engage in a free-for-all triangle duel—Juudai and Johan plan to team up, of course, for their common enemy is Yuusuke who they know must be taken down. During the course of the duel, however, Darkness-in-Yuusuke’s-body gains entrance into Johan’s mind. It is not clear exactly what happens aside from Darkness actually being able to enter it and see what there is to exploit. He can sense the power of the Gem Beasts trying to protect their master’s mind, though they do not appear to actually hurt him. What Darkness does manage to do is get Johan to repeat certain phrases, as though he is brainwashing him as he magnifies his personal darkness—his desire to defeat Juudai. Darkness gets as far as convincing Johan that he set up the duel for him and that he needs to defeat Juudai.
It is with the whispers of Darkness in his head to which he arrives in Econtra—before he had had time to fully overcome his darkness and reconcile with it, he finds himself in a bleak and terrible place.
